Inspiration

Have you ever wanted to find a way to search for the best dining experience? Maybe you wanted to try a specific dish or match a certain cuisine with a specific vibe. In external research, we found that, on average, over 8.4 million monthly search queries include the words "restaurants near me", but there tends to be limitations to the user experience of personalizing restaurants to other factors. As a team, our goal is to help users search for new places to eat in a way that fosters community and makes food finding an entertaining experience.

What it does

Munched is a social media app that allows users to create posts of their dining experience through food content. Users can create a post and personalize it through the social feed by location, price, rating, and mood. Through this, other users can interact with the content as they search for places to eat by dish or restaurant.

How we built it

We first built our design prototype through Figma to ideate the screens and user flow. We used Figma's Dev Mode and the Anima plugin to grab specific CSS elements and built our app on React using CSS, HTML, and JS. We then used GitHub as a version control system to deploy and host our final working app.

Challenges we ran into

Not having enough time to fully implement a functional backend with databases and real data, and learning how to use React for the first time as mainly backend developers.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our developers are proud to learn React over the weekend and build a functional template of the app and complete the project.

What we learned

Time management, React, and new product frameworks.

What's next for Munched

We plan to build a functional backend, adding end points for databases, adding a search algo, and cleaning up and making the codebase more dynamic. Also we want to implement GPT's API to learn user preferences and filter for suggested restaurants.
