Inspiration

According to the article "Why Immigrants Miss Out on Banking" published by The Motley Fool, immigrants face many barriers to accessing traditional banking services, including language barriers, documentation requirements, and a lack of understanding of the financial system in the United States. This can lead to immigrants being excluded from important financial opportunities and services. Our inspiration for building a mobile banking application that is intuitive and easy to use with speech to text translation in multiple languages and a visually appealing and interactive design is to provide a solution that makes banking accessible and inclusive for all, including immigrants.

What it does

Our mobile banking application, MyBank, provides a platform that allows immigrants to easily access and manage their finances. The app is designed with speech to text translation in multiple languages, making it easy for users to communicate with the app and understand their account information. Additionally, the app is designed to simplify the banking experience for all users.

How we built it

We received feedback from employees of the University Credit Union as well as our local community such as family and friends on the design of the application. We built MyBank using react-native and firebase. Also, we used react-native library for the speech to text translation feature.

Challenges we ran into

The most time-consuming challenge that we faced was onboarding all team members with their development environments. Furthermore, there were the nice-to-have features that we spent time on and some that we failed to implement.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Some of the accomplishments that we took joy in the moment and post-creation are the integration of text-to-speech and the implementation of text translation. Seeing the product evolve from a skeleton closer to the team's vision for the product is a feeling like no other.

What we learned

We learned that planning, prioritizing and setting clear goals from the start is the key to success for both hackathons and project creations. Extra, cool features are unnecessary for MVP rollouts and the product concept should always be remembered throughout the process. From our experience, we should have moved on after spending 30 minutes to an hour on a problem.

What's next for MyBank

Moving forward, we plan to continue improving and expanding the features of MyBank to make it an even more comprehensive banking platform for immigrants and all users. We plan to conduct more user feedback to understand what are the pain points of their current banking experience and how we can provide solutions.
