MyFleetMPG is a user-friendly computer application that allows vehicle owners to automatically monitor and record their fuel economy in real-time for multiple cars and trucks. The application can be accessed from any computer or through a smartphone app. Historic fuel economy, refueling events, and any maintenance, repairs, or other costs are all automatically recorded or input by the user as needed. Total cost of ownership, cost per mile, and other metrics are all provided to the user to give more insight to where their money is being spent.

This application also provides more insight as to how fuel economy is affected based on driver behavior and vehicle condition. For example, fuel economy versus speed graphs show the user the cost of driving over the speed limit (each 5 mph over 50 mph is a 7% decrease in fuel economy according to the EPA). By tracking and encouraging regular maintenance, further fuel economy improvements can be unlocked (up to a 4% benefit according to the EPA). Other data promoting improved fuel economy is also made available in a user-friendly format. Additionally, users can also opt-in to targeted advertising for products that will help their specific vehicle run more efficiently.

We are also looking to integrate this data into a residential real-time electricity monitor that is currently being developed (www.energyplusmonitor.com). This will give consumers insight into their vehicle and home energy use, costs, and CO2 emissions. Between vehicles and a typical house (applicances and heating and cooling), about 95% of CO2 emissions are accounted for (fueleconomy.gov).
