Inspiration
Nutrition is a universal need, yet millions of people worldwide — especially the elderly — struggle to make informed food choices due to complex labels, lack of guidance, or health conditions.
We saw that existing apps are often too generic, region-locked, or overly technical, leaving vulnerable populations underserved.
Our aim: create a global, AI-powered nutrition companion that adapts to cultural diets, languages, and personal health needs.
What it does
MyNutriMate is a dual-role platform for patients and health professionals.
- Patients can scan nutrition labels, upload prescriptions, and get instant AI-powered insights on whether a food is safe for their health profile.
- Doctors/Nutritionists can track patients’ health trends, review dietary history, and provide tailored feedback.
- Works worldwide with multilingual support and region-specific food databases.
- Focuses on elderly care but flexible for anyone managing chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, or general wellness.
How we built it
- Frontend: Cross-platform mobile & web app using React / Jetpack Compose for seamless experience.
- Backend: Supabase for secure prescription & user data storage.
- AI Layer: Google Gemini Vision for nutrition label analysis + health-based food recommendations.
- Security: Encrypted data transfer, role-based access, and secure authentication.
- Localization: Built-in translation engine for global accessibility.
Challenges we ran into
- Building a truly global food recognition system — labels, measurements, and diet norms vary widely between countries.
- Ensuring elder-friendly UI without sacrificing advanced functionality.
- Managing AI accuracy for both medical terms and regional food items.
- Balancing privacy regulations across different regions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Created a working prototype that scans and interprets food labels in multiple languages.
- Established a doctor-patient link system for personalized health tracking.
- Designed a minimal yet accessible interface that elderly users can navigate easily.
- Made the system flexible for any chronic condition and scalable to multiple regions.
What we learned
- Nutrition tech must adapt to cultural and personal contexts to be truly impactful.
- Elderly-focused design principles are universally beneficial for all users.
- AI can bridge the gap between medical knowledge and everyday decisions — but needs human oversight for safety.
What's next for MyNutriMate
- Expand the food database to cover every major region.
- Integrate offline mode for low-connectivity areas.
- Partner with global health organizations to reach underserved communities.
- Add real-time health tracking via wearable integration.
- Build voice-assistant features for users with limited mobility or vision.
