We are both mechanical engineers who love to code! We are passionate about bringing hardware and software together in a way that enhances people's experiences and interactions with technology. That is why we decided to create a gesture-controlled map-browsing interface that allows users to check out Trip Advisor destinations by simply moving their hands. The product is a web application that allows the user to search for a particular geographical destination by name (city, country, street address, etc.). The location they choose is then searched for the top 10 closest hotels using the Trip Advisor API. The user can put the Myo Armband on their arm and use four basic hand gestures to flip between the 10 hotels, view their average customer ratings and price ranges, open their websites in a new tab, and close the websites to return to the map.
This project is a simple proof of concept which has tremendous potential to be improved. Future iterations could include functionality for browsing Google Street View or Google Earth, and also more advanced gestures.
Thanks to Trip Advisor for hosting this great event, and to all the mentors who helped us throughout the night!
