Inspiration
What inspired us to do this project was the ability to apply our knowledge of data science on real world problems and statistics. We were drawn to the data of wildfires in the United States because it is an issue that is getting more detrimental with every passing year due to climate change and we wanted to see what type of trend the fires were taking and how wildfires had evolved from 2000 to 2010 and even to 2020.
What it does
We analyzed trends in wildfires from 2000-2010, trying to find patterns in the data that show us how wildfires will look like in the future, and how they have changed within the past years.
How we built it
We built it by using Python to help filter out the data we needed and used Excel and Tableau to create visuals for the presentation.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges we ran into was cleaning the data. We had to use Python due to how big the dataset was, and Excel was extremely slow when we tried to do the filtering. Another challenge was finding more recent data that we could use to show the change over time for wildfires.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our visualizations are something that we spent a lot of time on and are proud of how they turned out. The time series visual in particular took a lot of patience and data cleaning to create. We are also proud of how we worked well as a group together being able to create a knowledgable and creative project within a day of work.
What we learned
We learned about how wildfires have been affecting the United States over the past twenty years, and how the patterns of wildfires have been changing overtime due to changes in temperatures, rainfall, and droughts. We learned how to create time series visuals as well as use tableau in a quick and accessible way to save us time on our work.
What's next for Natural Science
We need to take action on climate change to try and help prevent wildfires. Although some are good for the environment, most are not and this problem is getting worse every year because of climate change. Taking action is needed so that the United States can be a safer place for people and keep nature's beauty.
