NeuroTune

NeuroTune is a music analyzer that uses EEG technology to enhance music therapy by evaluating the suitability of songs for therapeutic purposes.

Music selection is the basis of all music therapy, so music must be carefully chosen to avoid triggering negative memories, anxiety, or overstimulation. While using preferred music improves cognitive function, emotional stability, social engagement, and communication skills, categorizing patients and relying on generalized songs for specific disorder groups is ineffective, as not every song resonates with every patient.

Besides, there are two major challenges in music therapy:

  • Limited access to music therapists due to availability or cost.
  • Unreliable reports of musical preferences from patients

Considering the cognitive health of the Canadian population, our group focused on individuals living with dementia or aphasia because these are conditions that often make it hard to express preferences reliably.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the country, often resulting in aphasia, a language impairment. Additionally, the Alzheimer Society reports that over 350 Canadians develop dementia each day.

NeuroTune addresses these challenges by:

  • Labeling songs as “liked,” “neutral,” or “not liked” based on real-time EEG analysis, eliminating the need for subjective reports.

  • Empowering caregivers with a tool to conduct personalized, solo “receptive” music therapy sessions without the need for a music therapist’s presence.

With NeuroTune, we aim to provide effective, patient-centered care, improving the well-being of individuals who struggle to express their preferences due to cognitive or communication challenges.
