Inspiration

Light pollution is one of the fastest-growing forms of environmental degradation, yet most people don’t realize how much the night sky pollution there is. We were inspired by the idea that everyday technology — like a smartphone camera — could help people see, measure, and preserve what’s being lost. NoctaOrbis was created for active environmental awareness.

What it does

NoctaOrbis is a community-powered platform that measures light pollution using smartphone cameras. that brings it to a heatmap where the user can see where the good and bad light poulution is

How we built it

A React Native + Expo frontend for cross-platform mobile development AI-based image analysis to estimate sky brightness and Bortle classification Firebase backend services for authentication, storage, and data archiving

Challenges we ran into

finding a dataset, getting the friends screen to work

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Making a clean UI, and making the heatmap work

What we learned

Before starting a project, Finding a dataset if using an ML model, as it can be a big challenge. We also discovered the importance of thoughtful UX in scientific tools

What's next for NoctaOrbis

Improve AI calibration across different camera devices Improve the ML model for better accuracy Introduce long-term trend visualizations and historical comparisons Expand the community map for global sky monitoring Add educational modules to strengthen critical thinking around light pollution and urban design Gamification AR real world constellation
