there's no easy way to catalog our taste, which is why we created notes.

notes is an essential companion app for any discerning listener. it’s built from the ground up to be both your personal music journal, as well as a platform for critics and superfans alike.

review track-by-track

  • rate and write reviews, notes, for your favorite tracks
  • each track has its own page

capture your thoughts

  • what did you like? what didn’t you like?
  • notes are separated into verified critic reviews and community reviews
  • community reviewers can pay for a “superfan” subscription to highlight their review

build your database

  • your information is stored and organized to your account
  • see which songs you liked most, and what you liked about them
  • highly rated songs and what you liked about them will contribute to more accurate song recommendations

notes is not merely a music journal, but a rating and critiquing platform as well. each song’s page features an overall rating, as well as a catalogue of verified critic and community reviews.

public notes contribute to deeper and more nuanced conversations about music. music is an art form, and art is meant to be interpreted and discussed. notes is a way to discuss and discover loved tracks, and explore the detailed thoughts of other passionate listeners beyond just a flat and lifeless “like” or “stream” count.

our vision for notes is an indispensable tool for fans, critics, and creators alike. we see notes as a platform for fans to provide feedback and discuss what they think, critics to provide insight, and creators to receive feedback. we aren’t building just another social network, we want notes to become an ultimate utility app for understanding and rating music; the definitive second screen for your listening experience.

how we built it

to keep things easy, we decided on a simple tech stack: next.js, neondb, auth,js, google gemini, google cloud platform, and spotify's web api to build our project. we designed our project to provide a streamlined ux experience. we created a simple and straightforward ui, as our goal was to be as minimal as possible for debugging and testing. notes is targeted towards a gen-z userbase, so deciding on a theme that was simple but elegant was extremely important.

challenges and accomplishments

the greatest hurdle was combining our figma make code with our backend, which was by far the most time consuming task. another challenge was setting up our spotify integration, as setting up a lot of configurations in a short time proved to be difficult. coming up with an attractive design was also a unique challenge, as we wanted our site to maintain a minimal design with functionality without feeling crowded.
