Inspiration
The genesis of NuRx was rooted in our firsthand experiences with the intricacies of medication management. Many of us have, at various junctures, turned to family members for advice on suitable medication regimens, especially when distanced from familiar surroundings. This predicament is amplified for senior citizens and younger individuals grappling with chronic conditions, as they navigate a maze of multiple prescriptions. Alarmingly, the rise in fatalities linked to medication errors highlighted an urgent necessity for a robust platform to guide healthcare professionals. Furthermore, understanding that regions, be it within our nation or globally, particularly those that are impoverished or war-stricken, often face a dearth of healthcare professionals, NuRx emerges as a beacon of hope. It empowers those who find themselves in impromptu caregiving roles, overburdened healthcare workers, or individuals isolated from professional medical care, ensuring they can make informed decisions about prescriptions, either for themselves or others.
What it does
NuRx serves as a sophisticated tool for both patients and healthcare practitioners, enabling them to ascertain the potential interactions between multiple drugs using their generic names—a feature designed for universal applicability, considering the variability of drug brand names across countries. Our advanced AI integration offers a comprehensive analysis of these interactions, educating users about potential risks, thereby minimizing adverse health impacts. Another noteworthy feature is NuRx's ability to translate drug brand names into their generic counterparts, further enhancing global accessibility.
How we built it
Our web-based application, NuRx, was meticulously crafted using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This foundation facilitates seamless interaction between the user interface and a suite of APIs that provide information on drugs, their interactions, and AI functionalities.
Challenges we ran into
The journey wasn't without its challenges. Identifying up-to-date drug databases proved to be a formidable task. Ambitions to incorporate features like a pill identifier were thwarted due to the discontinuation of certain databases and their corresponding APIs. Integrating AI elaboration was another hurdle, given our nascent experience with various AI tool APIs. Notably, our AI does not operate on user inputs but processes data from the drug interaction API, adding another layer of complexity.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite these challenges, the successful integration of AI stands as a testament to our commitment and adaptability. This was an area we ventured into with a keen interest in HackSC, and its successful execution fills us with immense pride.
What we learned
We delved deep into product development nuances, factoring in target demographics, usability, and innovation. Our proficiency in JavaScript was sharpened, enabling us to craft an interactive platform that synergizes outputs from diverse APIs. This amalgamation helps NuRx stand out, offering unparalleled authenticity. Our exploration also introduced us to potential AI tools like GPT and Replicate.
What's next for NuRx
Looking ahead, we aspire to enhance NuRx's capabilities by introducing a pill identification function using machine learning, an invaluable asset for those with compromised vision or memory. Additionally, our vision encompasses a comprehensive database that encompasses medications from every corner of the globe, transcending the limitations of major markets like the US, UK, and India.
