Inspiration

"Report: Americans Need to Eat 90% Less Meat for Planet to Survive." This shocking headline I stumbled upon while browsing Reddit made me curious: Is it really true? Is food that powerful?? What else have we been eating that is destroying the planet??? To find the answers to these questions, we built NutriPet.

What it does

Adopt a virtual pet and keep them alive while learning sustainable eating habits with NutriPet. Choose a pet from GreenPaws Refuge and enter your daily food intake. NutriPet provides feedback on the environmental impact of your eating habits, helping you improve your diet in order to save the planet and its ecosystems by reducing your carbon footprint.

How we built it

React, Javascript, CSS, HTML, OpenAI API

Challenges we ran into

Training the model to stay on task and deliver relevant feedback to the user. Lack of datasets focusing on dietary choices and environmental impact. Inability to scrape academic papers on the subject in bulk due to paywalls or other restrictions. Getting the Python/Flask backend to work across devices.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Building something to completion :)

What we learned

How to incorporate gamification in a web app. Incorporating sensitive information into a webpage without exposing it to the browser.

How to build a web app using React and integrating an API.

What's next for NutriPet

Would love to be able to scrape academic papers on the subject in bulk to train our own model to have more precise and up-to-date feedback for our users. Also, adding a food glossary that tracks trends in eating patterns (dairy, greens, etc.) across the year as user's diet improves using a food classification API.
