Inspiration
As international students, we face with uncertainty of danger when travelling. While we're familiar with notorious danger areas, we're not quite familiar with other disti
What it does
ObserVan visualizes areas in Vancouver as a heatmap, allowing users to assess potential threats in each areas/regions. Users will be able to make their own decisions and consider alternative routes for travelling.
How we built it
We built our project purely using HTML, CSS, and Javascript powered by Google Gemini AI. Our website is data-driven using public crime datasets from VPD's open data website.
Challenges we ran into
Our website is able to summarize number of incidents in each area in Vancouver, but we couldn't make exact pinpoints of incidents. Additionally, our AI couldn't detect a pattern for time of occurring incidents, which would have provided more details for users during travelling.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of being able to have a working prototype of our vision that contributes to public society and increases safety awareness for people in Vancouver.
What we learned
Team collaboration both in-person and using GitHub, using API to build a website, and implementing a chatbot onto a website.
What's next for ObserVan
Polishing bus route planner by using places/buildings and highlighting routes from start to end of destination (like Google Maps).
