Inspiration
The inspiration for the development of OccuSafe stems from us analyzing datasets to identify and provide awareness of current and future trends related to occupational safety. Construction workers face many on the job dangers and difficulties which can cause serious injuries and could even be fatal. We wanted to create a web app that serves as a catalyst to determine current and future trends of occupational safety while also providing an interactive experience to educate workers in the field!
What it does
OccuSafe is a web app with 3 core features being the Data, Tips, and Game screen. On the Data page, users can observe and study graphs which are very intricately implemented using PowerBI as well RStudio to calculate occupational safety trends. With the Tips feature, occupational safety workers can learn more about following the correct safety protocols and guidelines to prevent future injuries or fatalities. With the Game feature, users can test their knowledge of all the information provided on the Tips page to determine how well they are familiar with their safety protocols.
How we built it
JavaScript and Reactjs library were used to build the web app while PowerBI and RStudio were utilized to analyze the datasets.
Challenges we ran into
Our main challenge as a team was dealing with large sets of data, in a short span of time. Other challenges include time management due to conflicting schedules and lack of experience in Power BI and R, as these two were completely new to us.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to work with each other, by meeting short-term goals and assigning ourselves tasks to complete. Most of all, we're proud of ourselves for seeing things through and completing a job in under 60 hours! Some of us had no experience in R and Power BI, and this was a start of learning something new! It was a huge achievement cleaning out large data sets and incorporating it in our presentation. We critiqued and bounced ideas off of each other constructively, allowing us to discover the nuanced relationships hidden behind simple data sets and ultimately come up with implementations we’re proud of. Overall, it was an incredible experience, and we're glad we were able to work on this as a team, possessing different strengths!
What we learned
Technical skills were definitely something new we learned, by self-teaching, asking mentors and judges. For some of us, it was the first time using Power BI and R and we learned as we went, figuring out the ins and outs of it. We also learned how to work in a group collaboratively , listen to different points of view, and make choices on how to proceed with the project's next phases.
What's next for OccuSafe
We'd want to keep working on this project with more experienced developers and a strong business plan. Considering the safety of our workers should be number one priority in different kinds of occupations, and given the data, the future looks promising.
