Inspiration

Poor medication adherence costs us $290 billion dollars per year. This is money that could be spent researching solutions to new diseases, not ways of getting people to take medication for treatable ones.

What it does

OctoMed is a simple service that makes it easy to keep track of prescriptions. Using your voice is more natural than a computer, so we made it easy to track, update, and learn more about your medications with minimal button pressing. OctoMed can keep track of when you take your medication, remind you of upcoming doses, and allow caregivers to simply track when their patients are taking their medication.

Instead of remembering confusing medication names, OctoMed allows users to specify nicknames instead. So instead of trying to say "hydrochlorothiazide", you can say "the round white one!"

How we built it

OctoMed is a web application built using AngularJS and the Houndify API, created by SoundHound. We use design cues from the Google Material Design spec to keep the interface clean and intuitive.

Challenges we ran into

Medication adherence is a big issue, and something that takes time to understand. Our application can only improve as we learn new information.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to use a rich API to build a client that can improve the quality of living for both patients and caregivers.

What we learned

We have learned a lot about the issue of medication adherence and the impact it has on the medical field. We have also learned about natural language processing and how you do not always need a user interface to build a useful product.
