Inspiration
I was heavily inspired by games such as Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley. The cat's design was inspired by the cat villagers in Stardew Valley while the gaming mechanics were inspired by Stardew Valley. However fish cultivation was inspired by some scientific news I saw on Twitter and TikTok, where scientists successfully made artificial salmon by growing salmon cells.
What it does
You play as a cat who can fish up to five different types of fish. Once successfully caught, you can sell it for maximum profit, release it for some profit (but if the fish is legally supposed to be released, you get more money than you would've gotten if you sold it), or cultivate it and slowly make profit with time.
How we built it
I built it on Game Maker Studio 2.0 using their written language: GML. The assets were made on ibisPaint on an iPhone.
Challenges we ran into
Challenges we ran into were game mechanics breaking when new assets were brought in. There was more content to the game, however it was scrapped since there were only a couple of hours left of the hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud that I was able to code so many features in such a short span of time. It is uncommon for me to be able to pump so many mechanics out without getting demotivated in such a short span of time, so I am glad that the time limit really pushed me out of my comfort zone.
What we learned
I learned to be more welcoming of unexpected complications. I was initially upset that I couldn't implement a title screen or lights in the game because the fishing mechanic would break, but I decided it was for the best because of the time limit.
What's next for [ONLINE] Catfish
I would like to finally add a title screen and perhaps a shop so you can buy items to put on your boat.
