Our project, OpenTrees, is a collaboration between three innovative projects: Silvi Protocol, Eco Labs and FarmOS. We are passionate about using cutting-edge technology to solve real-world environmental challenges.
Silvi Protocol provides a smartphone application that captures data about trees & their stewardship, including images. Meanwhile, Eco Labs is developing a methodology for verifying agroforestry practices, ensuring that regenerative practices are being followed. Finally, FarmOS provides an open-source platform for recording agricultural data & publishing workflow logic.
Silvi & Eco Labs have been discussing collaboration for several months, trying to figure out how to use SIlvi App as the human-sensing dMRV element of a holistic methodology which incorporates multiple sensing techniques in addition to human-sensing (smartphone based), like remote-sensing (IoT & Satellite) & reputation-sensing (DIDs & VCs / Passports). We were struggling to figure out exactly how to collaborate. Once we saw the potential of the open source structures of FarmOS, we realized we could leverage this platform to upload data and structure the processes for building an 'Adaptive Agroforestry & Smallholder Stewardship' methodology based on these different types of sensing techniques.
We knew we had to start with something a bit more simple than an entire methodology, so we began with a Tree Schema which uses CO2.Storage + FarmOS to serve as the backbone of the project. With CO2.Storage, we could store open ecological asset data schemas (like Tree Assets from Silvi) and combine data from multiple sources in a way that is easily validated and used to issue eco-assets. Paul from FarmOS helped weave it all together to create a Silvi + FarmOS integration with CO2.Storage, which provides an interoperable foundation for an Eco Labs methodology to be built upon.
One of the biggest challenges we faced was building the interoperable infrastructure needed to bring all of these technologies together. However, through this hackathon, we were able to see the potential of CO2.storage and will continue to build upon it.
Our goal with OpenTrees is to scale open & decentralized dMRV & claims models to verify regenerative forestry practices. We are excited about the potential of this project, and Silvi / Eco Labs are planning to expand on this foundation & develop an Agroforestry specific methodology on Hadera using the Guardian infrastructure.
