Inspiration

As college students, life can get pretty busy. Sometimes, assignments can seem all consuming and make other daily activities seem like less of a priority. Social life, physical health, and mental health of students can be hard to maintain with all of the stress from classes. However, it is very important to take breaks from our work in order to maintain a balanced lifestyle. We also did an Instagram poll asking what people have struggled with the most in college. The amount of responses involving mental health, making friends, and the "freshman 15" was overwhelming. This app hopes to help encourage a nutritionally balanced lifestyle in order to improve mental health, allow students to take breaks from their classwork, and socialize with friends over meals.

What it does

To help solve this issue, our team has created Pack Snack, an app that reminds the user when to eat, allows the user to invite friends to meals, and suggests nutritionally balanced options from the food available at the dining halls on campus.

How we built it

We used Figma to show a more polished product/ what we hope the app to look like in the future. We also created a Java implementation that actually determines the best meal for the user out of a menu text file.

Challenges we ran into

Debugging the Java implementation took a while, but it was a very fun time!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a demo of the user interface, making a working Java implementation with text-based user interface, filming and editing a video demonstration of the application, and working very well as a team.

What we learned

We learned the importance of designing our program prior to writing code and ensuring that every team member was on the same page about the application, its uses, and its design. We also learned the importance of pushing to our repo often to make sure everyone on the team has updated code.

What's next for Pack Snack

Some ways in which we can improve the app include adding more food preferences to be more inclusive of various religions and diets, connecting an NCSU nutritionist to the app, adding more nutritional information about each of the items on the menu, and adding campus restaurants to the interface.
