We created a website that takes the educational level of users in Seattle and uses that to gauge their interest in terms of social activism involvement and their interests.

Inspiration

Reposting on Instagram just isn't enough.

During these difficult times, people want to help their community, but aren't sure how. Many people are asking: How can I be involved in social activism? How can a ordinary person make a difference?

Our goal is to break individual out of this mindset. Offer them the toolkit to begin their journey for change. Ultimately, we aim to show them how they can make an impact;

One individual cannot possibly make a difference alone. It is individual efforts, collectively, that makes a noticeable difference-all the difference in the world

With Pander, we match users with an organization based on their interest to encourage social activism. Targeted towards interested students: High school & College, in Seattle.

What it does

We created a website that allows users to explore social activism groups based on their interests and desired level of involvement. Some group initiatives are:

  • BLM
  • Youth
  • Incarceration Reform
  • Female Empowerment
  • Small Business Relief
  • Animals
  • Food Conservation

We hope to get people more involved in their communities by donating, volunteering their time and helping spread awareness. This web-app would be a great platform for users to discover new initiatives, or even start new ones.

How we built it

Our team used Python, Flask, Html, CSS (bootstrap), Figma, Miro, Google-Spreadsheets

Challenges we ran into

We scoped our project too widely at the start and decided to trim down the features for the MVP. We also had trouble creating the desired survey/questionnaire that we were looking for with our framework and html. Since for most of us, it was our first hackathon and we had little to no coding knowledge, it was hard to put it to together. We ended up watching many youtube videos for python & flask, html and css forms, etc along with asking the mentors for help.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

All of us learned some new things! Teamwork proved to be crucial to make this project work; there was a lot of confusion initially how we would go about this. Towards the end, our image of the website became clearer. We're all glad that the website runs.

What's next for Pander

This webpage can become an up-to-date database for organizations with more features: calendar with engaging volunteering events, 30 minute coffee sessions with to better match users to social activism initiatives. The current focus is on local organizations in Seattle, but with a larger database it can be used in other cities to grow the user base.
