Inspiration
One of our members is aiming to hike the Appalachian Trail this year. During her preparation for it, she started having a lot of questions about the average woman's experience thru-hiking. How do they handle menstrual cycles? Is it safe to solo-hike as a woman? After researching a bit, she learned there isn't a lot out there for helping women with these kind of situations. pathfindHer is our solution to that gap!
What it does
PathfindHer is a web app designed to empower women on the Appalachian Trail. It addresses common concerns like safety and menstrual cycles, offering a supportive platform for women embarking on this journey. It aims to be a comprehensive guide for female thru-hikers.
How we built it
We made a web app with a React frontend and intended to use AWS Amplify to host it, AWS API Gateway and Lambda to handle the backend functionality. The main mapping feature was create with the Google Maps API.
Challenges we ran into
We kept running into trouble trying to connect the frontend to Amplify.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we were able to get the separate pieces (frontend and backend) going.
What we learned
Fitting every subsystem or separate tool together under the time crunch is the hardest part of a hackathon!
What's next for pathfindHer
Successfully connecting to AWS, expanding the community to other thru-hiking trails.
