Inspiration
When I adopted my dog in 2017, I wanted us to play table football, watch TV, and surf the internet together. Unfortunately, my dog was unable to do any of those activities because she is a dog. However, one thing that we were able to do together was perform yoga moves.
What it does
Paws & Poses is an app that brings together pets and their human friends. Some features of Paws & Poses is the daily yoga pose. The user can view community posts via a bottom sheet modal. There is also a game mode with four yoga challenges:
- Lone: Execute as many poses as you can with your pet in two minutes.
- Duel: Battle another duo and complete the five poses in the shortest amount of time.
- P.A.W.S: Just like HORSE in basketball, but in yoga.
- Meme: You are given a prompt. Act it out with your pet.
Finally, Paws & Poses offers an events page where users can post bonding events for their pets.
How I Built It
- Design: Figma
- Frontend: React-Native
- Backend: Firebase
Challenges I ran into
My Wi-Fi was cut out twice during the span of the hackathon, which hindered my progress. In addition, I had trouble connecting the react native application to my Android device. It helped when I tried clearing the cache and data of the application. Overall, it was definitely a learning experience.
What I learned
This was my first time using Figma in a hackathon. It was interesting to work with Figma and React-Native at the same time, because they both use components. I also received further practice in using Firebase to handle user authentication.
What's next for Paws & Poses
I hope that I can implement the game mode. This requires machine learning in order to identify if the user is performing the correct poses. If I accomplish this, it will make Paws & Poses be very distinct from all other apps.
