✨ Inspiration We were inspired by the emotional and technical hurdles many writers face—writer’s block, burnout, and the isolation of the creative process. As students and storytellers, we envisioned Pen Draft as an AI-powered literary companion: a tool that doesn’t just generate words, but understands the nuance of storytelling, helps with structure, and gives emotional and technical support through writing journeys.

🧠 What it does Pen Draft is an AI-powered book writing and publishing assistant that allows users to:

Brainstorm ideas through AI chat

Auto-generate chapter outlines and scene concepts

Edit and optimize text in real-time

Track word count, visualize writing sessions, and monitor productivity

Collaborate on drafts with other users via shareable links

Save and revisit all writing projects after logging in securely

🛠 How we built it We built Pen Draft using:

Next.js and TypeScript for full-stack development

Tailwind CSS for responsive, modern UI styling

OpenAI/Gemini API to power AI-based suggestions and editing

Chart.js for visualizing writing statistics

NextAuth for secure authentication

Vercel for deployment

We used a modular component design to separate functionality, including:

A real-time editor connected to AI

A dashboard for writing analytics

Project routing for authenticated user flow

🚧 Challenges we ran into Token Limitations: Managing the token constraints of AI APIs when generating or editing long passages.

Model Responsiveness: Ensuring real-time editing didn’t lag or bottleneck the user experience.

Time Constraints: Merging authentication, analytics, and AI logic into a smooth UX in under 48 hours.

Frontend Tweaks: Tailwind and layout components broke often during AI output rendering—requiring creative CSS fixes.
