Inspiration

Our journey began with a simple yet powerful realization: healthcare professionals, especially those serving underprivileged communities, were drowning in paperwork. Neuropsychologists, IEP evaluators, and social workers were spending countless hours on administrative tasks instead of patient care. We saw an opportunity to leverage AI and cloud technologies to not just streamline processes, but to fundamentally transform how healthcare services are delivered to those who need them most.

What it does

Penwell is an AI-powered document processing pipeline that revolutionizes healthcare administration:

  1. Intelligent Document Processing: Our system ingests various document types, converting them to a standardized format for AI analysis.
  2. Comprehensive Report Generation: By leveraging Claude AI and GPT, Penwell generates detailed, accurate reports for neuropsychological evaluations, IEPs, and social work assessments.
  3. Secure Delivery: Processed reports are securely emailed back to healthcare providers, ensuring quick turnaround and data privacy.

How we built it

Our development process was a journey of discovery and integration:

  1. We started with Google Cloud Platform as our foundation, utilizing services like Cloud Functions, Cloud Storage, and Secret Manager.
  2. We integrated Claude AI for advanced image and text analysis, and GPT for natural language processing.
  3. Custom prompts were developed and fine-tuned to ensure accurate and relevant report generation.
  4. We implemented a secure email delivery system using the Gmail API.

As we developed the document processing pipeline, we realized its potential for various healthcare situations. This led us to expand our focus, creating a comprehensive solution that addresses multiple healthcare challenges simultaneously.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Data Privacy: Ensuring HIPAA compliance while processing sensitive health information was a significant hurdle.
