Inspiration

Reflecting on the young adult's greatest struggle of indecisiveness, we honestly didn't know what to do. After hours of contemplation, pickymao.co decided to change the world by asking our very picky cat, Mao.

What it does

Picky Mao makes deciding where to eat easy! 1. Choose between food, drinks, or dessert. 2. Choose whether its to eat now, or to pick for later. 3. Select food type, cuisine, and distance. 4. Cat (Picky Mao) cooks!

Picky Mao generates the place, gives you the basic info, and does the decision making for you!

How we built it

Our front-end is built using React.js and Next.js. Our backend is sourced from Google Maps and our map and information generated at the end is sourced from the Google Maps Places API. We then deployed our website using Vercel.

Challenges we ran into

We wanted to use the Google Maps API as both our database and place selector. However, we struggled in figuring out how to use it. To move forward we created a temporary manual database. However, throughout the hackathon, we became more comfortable with these technologies, found more resources, and were able to use the Google Maps API to present food suggestions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Since it was all of our first hackathons, we are proud we were able to get a fully functioning and integrated app. We were proud of how the interfaced turned out, especially with the success of the eye catching gifs and animations.

What we learned

Many technical skills were learned, as it was all of our first times using API's and most of our first times using React.js and Next.js.

What's next for Picky Mao

  • Picky Mao will have additional streamlined choice buttons for those quick one moment decisions.
  • Implementation will be expanded to outside of the Gainesville area through the use of the Google Maps API.
