Inspiration

We were inspired to come up with a project that could help users with the growing issue of a lack of accessible healthcare education in the US. Many Americans struggle with their health because they may not have the tools to research or know where to start with forming healthy habits. With PictoBite, users have an incredibly simple and straightforward way to begin their healthcare journey!

What it does

The integrated AI feature allows users to upload or take a picture of their meal and get an estimate on how many calories they are consuming along with other nutritional details. A personalized nutrition calculator guides users to know how many calories they should have per day and breaking it down into how many carbs, sugar, etc they may need based off of weight, height, and age.

How we built it

We used React and TypeScript along with the OpenAI API to integrate OpenAI with our project, allowing the users to gain insights on their daily meals with ease.

Challenges we ran into

We had originally planned on building a mobile app using React Native, but after facing many bugs from all team members, we decided to pivot to web application development with React. This still allowed us to complete all features that we had been hoping to complete without slowing us down!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of sticking through even when we faced many bugs, some members of the team were still fairly new to GitHub and React, and all members were new to TypeScript, but we were able to come together as a group to leverage our strengths to help each other and learn new skills we had not worked with before.

What we learned

We learned how to integrate AI into our applications which will open up many more doors for all of us in future projects, using the powerful tool to bring our applications to a new level.

What's next for PictoBite

Next, the PictoBite team is looking to expand the app to allow users to save the specific data points that are useful to them as well as track their calories throughout the day all inside the app! Along with this, we are looking to implement features that will give users personalized diet plans based on their individual needs.
