Start with a phrase, pass it along through drawings and guesses, and watch how hilariously distorted it becomes. Play daily, upvote the best art, and enjoy the chaos with the Reddit community! 🔥

Inspiration

Our friends have always enjoyed playing telephone pictionary games together. It was always good memories creating chains of hilarious drawings with our own personal touches that sometimes became totally inaccurate. We saw this hackathon as the perfect opportunity to recreate this chill fun vibe with the reddit community, a place known to be creative and funny.

What it does

Game Flow 🎮

1. Daily Game Creation

A new game is created every day at 7 AM PST.
Each game consists of multiple phrases, players are evenly assigned random phrases.

2. Drawing Rounds (Three 5-Hour Rounds)

For the first drawing round:

Players receive a phrase from the game's phrases
They must draw an image that represents the given phrase

For all following rounds:

Players are given a reference drawing from a player in the previous round
They must recreate the meaning of the reference drawing in their own style

All rounds:

Each round lasts 5 hours
Players are given an unplayed phrase for each round to keep the phrases a secret.

3. Final Round: 24-Hour Guessing Round

Players are shown drawings from the final drawing round as reference.
They try to guess the initial phrase and are given a score for how similar it is to the original.
The final guessing phase lasts 24 hours.

4. Gallery & Upvotes

After the game, all drawings are showcased in a gallery.
Players can view and upvote their favorite drawings.

What's next for Pictoloom

Disclaimer: we were unaware webviews supported React until the second last day and that personal servers could be whitelisted so we coded some parts in a kind of cursed way to work around that.

Our game logic is fully functional and playable, but there are some further improvements and cool features we want to make before launching to the public to deliver the best first impression:

Set up our own server and database for additional functionality and more storage capacity.
Additional options when viewing a gallery of drawings: ones that used your’s as reference, for specific rounds, specific phrases.
Add leaderboard for users based on drawing upvotes and guess scores.
Option to add custom phrase banks for more personalized games.
Option to share drawings to reddit.
Some beta testing with our friends.
