Inspirations

We were inspired by games like Getting Over It, Doodle Jump, and Kirby. The art style and theme were inspired by Diary of a Wimpy Kid and the pirate concept used at Knight Hacks 2024.

What it does

Pirate'd challenges users to reach the top of a vertical momentum-based obstacle course, with 3 levels of increasing difficulty.

How to play

A - Left | D - Right | Space - Jump You must use your jumps and speed to outrun the incoming wave! Rapidly tap spacebar to wall jump between platforms with big gaps. The walls have no friction, so use every surface to get the momentum you need.

How we built it

Pirate'd is built in Unity 2D and features custom-made sprites made with Aseprite and Pixaki 4.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge we faced involved trying to implement the animations in the Unity Engine. We also faced challenges in designing fun, meaningful, and reasonably difficult levels that complemented our unique gameplay mechanics.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of the way we managed our time to successfully take Pirate'd from an idea to a fully realized game! We are more than pleased with the core gameplay mechanics, especially the self-made animations and sprites. We are also thrilled with the progress bar feature.

What we learned

We learned how to create and implement sprites, design user interfaces, and understand the relationship between animations and objects.

What's next for Pirate'd

We look forward to implementing more levels and polish the overall design. We would also like to explore how to implement technologies like AI to streamline level-creation.
