Inspiration

Due to the current US political climate, Planned Parenthood is likely to be defunded by the federal government. As a result, less people will have access to essential reproductive health services, particularly in some of the most economically vulnerable areas. This site aims to provide options for people looking to receive this care, with or without Planned Parenthood access. We realized that due to the political climate in our country, women and many others will find it increasingly difficult to get reproductive care at affordable prices. This would be primarily due to the defunding of Planned Parenthood in the not-too-distant future. We named our webapp after Planned Parenthood—PlannedB standing for the next option should many locations (especially in vulnerable areas) shut down, although the emphasis remains on “Planned” instead of “Plan” since it still remains crucial to focus resources on existing Planned Parenthoods.

What it does

The site shows a map of health institutions that provide cancer screenings, abortion services, and contraceptives. There is also a secondary utility that will help people figure out if they're eligible for reduced-cost or free breast/cervical cancer screenings.

How we built it

We used Bootstrap, CSS, HTML and Firebase to build the site, as well as MapBox to build the map. We also drank a lot of water to stay hydrated.

Challenges we ran into

We had trouble implementing the Mapbox API so that a user could easily filter the type of service provided. We also are no longer able to use Mapbox's geocoding API to make the map center around a zip code input with its specific distance radius, so for now the map requires manual zoom-in.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of being able to get the location markers on the map in different colors! Also, we think our logo is cute and our name is pretty punny.

What we learned

We learned that it’s difficult to get information from government websites efficiently because they do not have downloadable databases. salt...

What's next for PlannedB

We’d like to be able to center the map around a given zip code. We’d also like to be able to give more information about a larger range of services—from HIV/AIDs/STI screening to prenatal care. We’d also like to add information to all the marker descriptions, primarily phone numbers and links to allow easy access to directions. The UX also leaves something to be desired, and we hope to make our app more user-friendly in the future.
