Inspiration We noticed how hard it is for students to casually meet up without endless group chats or long-term planning. Sometimes you just want to find one more person for lunch or a quick study session without making it a huge deal — that’s where Plus1 comes in.
What it does Plus1 is a spontaneous event board for students. Users can create simple event posts ("Need a study buddy at the library in 10 min") or browse nearby open events and join instantly. It's built for low-commitment, real-time connection.
How we built it We built Plus1 using Flutter for cross-platform development, Firebase for real-time backend support, and integrated location services to help users find nearby posts. Everything is designed for speed — minimal clicks, lightweight UI, and instant updates.
Challenges we ran into Getting real-time event updates without cluttering the feed was tricky.
Accomplishments that we're proud of We created a clean, frictionless app that feels natural to use. Plus1 actually feels casual — it doesn’t pressure users the way normal event apps sometimes do.
What we learned Simple is harder than it looks. Stripping features down to only what really matters takes a lot of iteration and ruthless prioritization.
What's next for Plus1 We want to add "trusted circles" so students can post events either publicly or just to friends. We're also looking at lightweight verification to keep the app safe and community-driven.
