Police RC

Inspiration

I have always been a big fan of Remote Control toys like cars, bikes, helicopters and my love for these toys became an inspiration to develop a lens on the same concept.

What it does

Lens consist of a 3D police vehicle and some 2 buttons on the screen which can be used to control the movement of the vehicle and also to toggle the police siren ON/OFF.

How we built it

At first I thought it would be a really easy task to make one just by accessing the local position and rotation of the vehicle, but turns out it was not as easy as it seems to be. So coming from a mathematics background I am really good in logics and used some really complex algorithms including sin and cos functions to detect the rotation of the vehicle then moving it in the same direction.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge was to detect the rotation of the vehicle and then moving the vehicle in the front facing direction, this was achieved by using the Math.sin and Math.cos and I divided the whole rotation in 4 quadrants and as we know sin and cos values vary from quadrant to quadrant so I scripted all the logics accordingly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am really proud of what I developed. In Spite of not coming from an engineering background I am really proud of the complexity of codes I wrote for this project. This lens has crossed over 630k views on snapchat and hundreds of people are making content and publishing the same on their spotlight which could be found on the lens page. Watching people using my lens and creating content makes me so happy and proud!

What we learned

This lens took around 3 weeks for development and a lot of efforts, many times I thought that I should stop working on this idea but I never gave up. So watching this lens go live and it performing so well makes me so happy and I learned there are many challenges but one should never lose hope!

What's next for Police RC

For ground, Police RC is done. Now I am thinking to develop Helicopter RC or a Chopper RC where the user can control a helicopter fly it around I will also give them a control to fire missiles from the chopper and what not!
