Inspiration
We were inspired by the Pomodoro Technique, which is a time management method that breaks tasks into a consistent pattern of working and taking breaks. Many students use this method to study and complete assignments, so we decided to incorporate this into our project and make it easier and more rewarding for students to use.
What it does
Pomopal is a mobile pomodoro timer app that displays time in a fun way. It shows a tomato plant that ripens as the user progresses with their studying, and the user harvests a tomato at the end of their pomodoro cycle. The app gamifies this studying technique by offering special unlockables for harvesting tomatoes. This gives users incentive to keep up their studying habits and continue using Pomopal to complete their collection.
How we built it
We built this in Figma, using the designer and prototyping modes and fig jam.
Challenges we ran into
We did not have the time to develop a working app prototype, since our group did not have any members with experience in app development. Instead, we focused on our strengths as designers to further improve our project concept.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a unique character and narrative in our app, making it more than just a pomodoro timer. We also developed a new way to visualize the passage of time and displayed this with figma animation and interactions.
What we learned
We learned rapid prototyping, Figma develop, Figma interactions, and we practiced how to quickly build our ideas from a broad theme into a Figma prototype that solves a specific problem.
What's next for Pomopal
We hope to develop a working app prototype. We also want to add more features to Pomopal, such as timer settings, a wider range of customisation options, as well as incorporate Generative AI into Pomopal's dialogue in order to create unrepetitive encouragement to users.
