Inspiration
With the current pandemic, it's easy to forget about mundane things, which includes keeping track of what's in your fridge. Even before the pandemic, it has always been so easy to forget about that avocado or that smelly cheese in the back of your fridge. No more of that! With potatOH!!!, you can keep track of what's in your fridge, as well as track the expiration date. Let's all reduce our food waste!
What it does
potatOH!!! allows its user to input a food item, along with its expiration date and food type. It stores the input in a simple and clear table, where the user can see what's currently in their fridge. After enjoying the food item, the user can delete it from the table.
How we built it
We built it with all of our heart <3 We used javascript, CSS, HTML and React to create our wonderful project, potatOH!!! We used React Router DOM to connect our pages together so that our spinning potato can have its own page.
Challenges we ran into
We had some issues with connecting the pages, but we were dedicated to having a page for our spinning potato and we persevered. We learned the importance of .gitignore (32000+ files that, unfortunately, took too much time to commit).
Accomplishments that we're proud of
First and foremost, our PRETTY SPINNING POTATO. We are proud of how far we've come with collaborating on GitHub. We didn't have any prior experience with javascript and React, and little to no experience with CSS. We were also unfamiliar with the IDE we had chosen to execute our project on. To have been able to create a project that compiles as we wanted is a feat in itself. We are also quite happy with our newfound familiarity with the command line.
What we learned
We learned that implementing a website requires a concrete and detailed plan. We also learned how to use React, its features and specifically, how it combines with javascript, CSS and HTML. We learned about some cool features of Twilio, that we, unfortunately, did not have time to explore and implement.
What's next for potatOH!!!
We want to implement a way to sort the items and to add a quantity column, so that users can keep track of how much they have left of a specific food item. We would like to have a graph feature that shows everyone's waste in order to motivate people to check what's in their fridge more regularly. We also want to implement a login feature so that it can be shared with family members and roommates, so that we can all contribute to reducing food waste!
