Pregait

Inspiration

The inspiration for Pregait stems from a deeply personal experience. Growing up in a low-resource environment, I witnessed how expecting mothers in my community struggled to access adequate support during pregnancy. Many lacked consistent communication with healthcare professionals, leading to preventable complications. The loss of my sister due to late diagnosis and poor access to care further fueled my passion to create a solution that ensures no mother feels unsupported during such a critical journey. I envisioned Pregait as a tool to bridge the gap, offering thoughtful and efficient support to expecting mothers worldwide.

What it does

Pregait is a secure, low-data maternity chat app designed to connect expecting mothers with their care teams. It provides:

  • Direct and Group Chats for seamless communication.
  • Offline Notifications to keep users informed even without internet access.
  • Built-in Emojis and GIFs to enhance conversations.
  • Message Editing and Deletion to ensure clarity.
  • Privacy and Security through end-to-end encryption, meeting healthcare data standards.
Pregait is optimized for low-resource environments, ensuring every mother has access to vital support.

How we built it

We built Pregait using:

  • Frontend: React, CSS, and HTML for a responsive user interface.
  • Backend: Node.js powered by GetStream.io for real-time chat functionality.
  • Communication: Twilio for SMS-based notifications and offline support.
  • Development Tools: JavaScript for dynamic interactions and CSS for styling.

The collaborative process included user research, prototyping, and iterative testing to ensure an intuitive and accessible experience.

Challenges we ran into

Building Pregait was not without challenges:

  1. Data Privacy: Ensuring compliance with healthcare standards like HIPAA was a steep learning curve.
  2. Offline Functionality: Designing an effective SMS-based notification system required extensive testing.
  3. Resource Constraints: Optimizing the app for low-resource environments with minimal data usage was a key hurdle.
  4. Team Coordination: Balancing timelines and integrating tools like GetStream.io and Twilio seamlessly into the project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully building a secure and responsive app that works in low-resource settings.
  • Implementing a robust offline notification system through Twilio.
  • Developing a user-friendly chat interface optimized for expecting mothers and their care teams.
  • Ensuring privacy and security compliance, providing peace of mind to users.

What we learned

Throughout the journey, we gained valuable insights:

  • The importance of user-centered design in healthcare applications.
  • Techniques to optimize applications for low-resource environments.
  • Deep understanding of data privacy laws and their technical implementations.
  • Effective team collaboration and integration of diverse tools and technologies.

What's next for Pregait

Pregait is just the beginning. Next steps include:

  • Scaling Multilingual Support: To break language barriers for global users.
  • AI Integration: Introducing AI-based pregnancy health tips and reminders.
  • Enhanced Accessibility: Adding voice commands for hands-free navigation.
  • Expanded Features: Creating a task tracker and educational resources for expecting mothers.
  • Community Expansion: Partnering with NGOs and healthcare providers to bring Pregait to underserved regions.

Pregait aims to be a lifeline for expecting mothers, ensuring that no one walks their journey alone, regardless of their circumstances.
