Inspiration

I was inspired by my own personal struggles and the struggles of my mother since both of us share the same chronic illness. The holidays and flue season are very hard on our family, so I wanted to create something that could keep us organized and on top of our health during such a busy time. You could say we hibernate at home until the chaos blows over, because exhaustion is a major consequence that often goes unseen.

What it does

Psynchron is a tracking app for people living with chronic illness. A few of the primary features are video call doctor's appointments using Twilio, PsynBot the health advisor chatbot, medication reminders, and symptom tracking. The app even features an emergency call button that will immediately send the past week's logs and information to your healthcare provider and dial 911 from the app, also alerting them of your phone's GPS location. This app not only empowers people to take charge of their healthcare, but it brings forward a cohesive and efficient way to manage life with a chronic illness.

How we built it

The app was created in Android Studios using Flutter, Kotlin, Swift, and Java. External integrations for Twilio and Google Cloud Dialogflow API were also used to make this possible.

Challenges we ran into

As a solo team, my main constraint was time and inexperience with Twilio and Google Cloud, but I worked around that and adapted to what I could learn in a short period of time to create something functional. The chatbot was likely one of the more difficult components of developing this app and most time consuming. Another challenge was doing research on chronic illnesses beforehand to better approach this app as a whole - I didn't want to dive in and create something that wouldn't be effective, so I spent about 12 hours going through scientific journals and medical reports.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm very proud of the complexity of this hack, as I've never created something so layered in such a short amount of time on my own before. Additionally, with more improvements, such as adding more accessibility features, this app could be put on the app store in the near future and really help people.

What we learned

I learned a lot about Twilio this weekend, but learned even more about Flutter and how to create more complex, multi-page applications. (Not to mention that 12 hours of research, which was really interesting!)

What's next for Psynchron

Definitely some improvements and then hopefully an app store launch in the near future!! After those accessibility features are added, of course.
