Inspiration
Researching how the plastic that causes pollution gets in the ocean, we found out that at least two-thirds of it comes straight from land-based sources: litter being left on the beach or washed down rivers and drains from litter being dropped in towns and cities. We realized that the best way to combat this is by stopping it at the root: helping people recycle more.
What it does
Encourage the people about being more careful to recycle their product and while buying a new item think about if it is reusability. When you take a screenshot of the item, machine learning works in the background and give you recommendation about if this item is recyclable or not. Besides this information, the system can provide you a score about the item's recyclability.
How we built it
We used a machine learning algorithm to create a recommendation system. The code is written in Python. And implemented as a mobile application.
Challenges we ran into
Implementation of the tensorflow on the code. Time limitation. 1 laptop down.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a set of criteria to determine which plastic products are more valuable for recycling and which are easy to recycle to be able to create a recommendation system to suggest eco-friendlier alternatives.
What we learned
Every team member shared their experiences with each other. And we improve ourselves in different tech subjects.
What's next for Re:circle
Create a focus group and seek feedback. If it is positive, include more locations, and expand from plastics to other recyclable materials to create one app for all recycling.
