Inspiration

A carrier told us that his company saves a lot of money by motivating their crew to drive fuel efficient.

What it does

The application that is integrated in the CID (Central Information Display) of the truck visualizes the driving behaviour of the trucker in real-time so he/she can adapt his/her behaviour to reduce fuel consumption. The driver is rewarded with points for good driving that he/she can get payed out in real money. After the ride he/she can see how other drivers performed on the same road.

How we built it

We used the data of MAN to calculate the economic efficiency of the ride and translated it into a score that can be used to compare the driving behaviour of multiple drivers. We built a web app with an angular frontend and used MongoDB to process the data.

Challenges we ran into

Data quality and quantity. We only had a dataset of one ride which had some questionable data points in it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

That we actually used the data and were able to do more than just visualizing them. We build an application with a strong use case on top of the data with a beautiful and simple User Interface.

What we learned

We learned a lot about the challenges and opportunities in the trucking industry and gained a deep insights about the complexity of all the moving parts in a truck.

What's next for RealTrucking

First, have a beer ;-). Then we want to analyze how to implement our solution in a real production environment and hopefully we find a partner that supports us on this ride.
