Inspiration
The inspiration for this project came from the fact that we are often at home with leftovers that we may have bought at the grocery store and not knowing what to do with it.
What it does
The project takes a pre-existing collection of ingredients and a pre-existing collection of recipes, and presents a set of recipes that can be made with the set of ingredients. It also tracks your currently owned ingredients and information about them such as quantity, purchase date, and expiry date.
How we built it
The web app was built using the Django Framework, which used HTML/CSS, Bootstrap and Python
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge was coming up with a creative idea to start, which our first day ended up dedicated to brainstorming with random ideas, eventually getting to a fridge visualizer and shifting the focus onto the food.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We ended up with a solid concept that people could make use of as well as a working demo, and that's something to be proud of for us since we're relative beginners to hackathons.
What we learned
Hackathons are more about the idea rather than how it's hacked together, and also having a balanced team with different but complementary skillsets is important even if you don't code, as we found out while planning the presentation and style later on.
What's next for Recipe Recommender
In theory, this could become a mobile app with features such as connecting to Loblaws/PC Express to automatically get your purchase history and populate items, showing more information like nutrition info and food banks to donate soon-expiring food to, and more relevant suggestions such as recipes that you don't have all the ingredients for and it would allow you to buy the missing ones directly.
