Inspiration
We were inspired to create Recycling Resources because we wanted to learn more about disposing waste properly. We wanted to propose a solution through informing the general public about the waste that goes into our environment. This waste will soon take up space needed for life. Additionally, it negatively impacts the environment and our health.
What it does
Our website has an interactive AI chatbox that simulates human conversation. The chatbox helps the user to determine how to dispose of waste through answering questions.
How we built it
We researched different toxic wastes and how to dispose them. Afterwards, we downloaded the app-developing software Atom and a collaborating package called teletype. We used Python 3 to create algorithms for keyboard entry and loops and searched up code for what we didn't know how to do. Then, we tested our code using trinket.io to debug and finalize our project.
Challenges we ran into
We had issues with spacing/indentation as well as punctuation. We also had limited knowledge in Python, so we didn't really know how to get user input.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating an AI app using Python to solve a real world problem.
What we learned
We learned more about recyclables, how to dispose them, and the severity of the problem. We also improved in Python and fostered a better understanding of what AI is. We learned to incorporate this in an app.
What's next for Recycling Resources
Expand accessibility and include a broader range of waste types, such as plastics, synthetic materials, etc.. We were thinking of including an API to show a map of nearby hazardous household wastes/e-waste drop-off locations.
