Our Mission: Bottle refill stations not only prevent unsanitary water common in drinking fountains, they also encourage the reuse of water bottles. This program can reduce plastic waste on the University campus, creating a greener, more sustainable campus. Story: Water should be an easily accessible commodity at a University as large as UCF. In various students' experiences, other than the RWC, many feel that the locations of water fountains are obscure, making fresh drinking water hard to access. Many of the ones that do exist on campus are drinking fountains, which are breeding grounds for many germs. The water quality is also significantly worse as bottle refills have more filtration. As a result, students would prefer plastic bottles.
Functions of App: Students can locate the nearest bottle refill station that has a clean filter. They can also choose to include vending machines or campus stores that sell clean water. Each fountain reports its current status using colors, last date it was changed, next time it needs to be changed. The status of the fountains are based on student input: similar to traffic incident report: students are able to report which fountains need to be replaced and the app can notify the management at UCF. The app not only shows the location on the map, but if you click into it it can show a picture and tell you the exact directions inside the building to avoid confusion
Overall Goal: Encourage UCF students to use bottle refill stations to allow clean, accessible water for everyone while also reducing plastic waste. This app can perhaps also encourage UCF to install more bottle refilling stations that are sanitary.
Challenges we ran into: We struggled implementing a cloud database, specifically firebase.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: Learning new languages, developing deep team cooperation, and having a functional program at our first hackothon.
What's next for Refill Radar: We plan on implementing tons of future development, including but not limited to locating all possible bottle refill stations, drinking fountains, and microwaves, implementing a review and rating system, as well as a reporting system that would take the refill stations with the most reported issues and notify UCF.
