Our story
We were walking around google maps one day when we first feared that we might not see a tree if we landed somewhere. Enter reForest: a tool to help you become more aware of the trees around you and help you on your google maps journey. By being aware of the nature we still have, we become better-equipped (and better-motivated) to protect that nature.
How we built it
NYC open data for the data. We plotted our graph with Folium ( A Python library used for visualizing geospatial data), and separately in Replit with a react app. Pandas was used store data locally for our Folium map; the react app simply gets from the NYC open data's SODA API and then uses the Google Maps API to provide a map base.
Challenges we ran into
Documentation was sparse. We persevered, worried that trees were sparser.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to collect over 9 data sets and deploy them.
What we learned
The magic of the Google maps API, collaboration, and folium.
What's next for reForest
A better web interface and more tree-viewers. We hope we can help everyone get to know their local trees better.
