♻️ ReHarvest – Reclaim. Reuse. Reharvest.

🌱 Inspiration

Every day, farmers, restaurants, and households discard edible food scraps and valuable agricultural byproducts due to lack of local reuse infrastructure. At the same time, composters, food banks, and biogas producers are actively searching for these exact materials. There’s a disconnect in the local food system — and we built ReHarvest to bridge that gap. Inspired by the circular economy, our goal was to transform waste into community-powered resources.

🔁 What it does

ReHarvest is a hyperlocal food and agri-waste exchange platform that lets users:

  • Post surplus items (e.g., vegetable scraps, overripe produce, crop residues)
  • Browse listings by category and intended reuse (e.g., compost, biogas, donation)
  • Automatically match with local users based on reuse type
  • View real-time sustainability metrics (e.g., food diverted, CO₂ saved)

It empowers users to turn excess into input — enabling circular reuse across the community.

🛠 How we built it

- Frontend: Built using React and Tailwind CSS for a clean and mobile-responsive UI - Backend: Firebase Firestore for real-time listings and storage - Matching Logic: Lightweight category-based exchange suggestion - Analytics: Chart.js for real-time visual impact tracking - Deployment: Hosted via Vercel for instant access and demonstration

We kept our architecture modular to allow rapid iteration during the hackathon while laying a foundation for future scalability.

🚧 Challenges we ran into

- Balancing scope with time — especially with geolocation and authentication - Designing intuitive flows for posting and filtering items - Implementing meaningful sustainability metrics with limited data in MVP form - Avoiding overcomplication while ensuring relevance and circularity in matching logic

🏆 Accomplishments we’re proud of

- Launched a full-stack, sustainability-focused platform within just 5 hours - Designed a live item exchange flow that supports both posting and discovery - Built a real-time impact dashboard with intuitive visualization - Developed a working demo that is both user-centric and technically scalable

📚 What we learned

  • How to translate circular economy principles into tangible software features
  • The power of minimal but well-crafted UI to drive user engagement
  • Strategies for low-latency, scalable state management with Firebase
  • The role of real-time feedback (like CO₂ savings) in behavior change and sustainability adoption

🚀 What’s next for ReHarvest

- Add geolocation support and distance-based filters - Enable user authentication and reputation tracking - Integrate logistics APIs for pickup and drop-off scheduling - Support carbon offset tracking and reporting - Explore white-label deployment with municipalities or NGOs - Offer a freemium SaaS model for farms, restaurants, and commercial users

ReHarvest is already hackathon-ready — and now we’re ready to extend it into a real-world, data-driven solution for community sustainability.
