1. Chosen Theme and Problem Statement

Chosen Theme: Environment. Problem Statement: In 2021, the National Environment Agency lamented that Singapore’s recycling rate had fallen to a 10 year low. What can we do to encourage more people to recycle, or make recycling more convenient and accessible?

2. What it does

Our hack aims to encourage recycling by incentivising individuals to recycle more and making it more convenient for individuals to recycle through geolocation of recycling bins and using image recognition to ensure items can be recycled. We propose to change the current recycling bins to allow scanning of QR code to register users, classify whether an item can be recycled. Also, the new recycling bin weighs how much a user recycles and rewards them for their contribution.

3. How does your hack answer the problem statement

People are currently not inclined to recycle because they are not familiar with the process of doing so. They may not be informed of what is recyclable and where can they do so. Our hack's Gamification, image recognition and location based functionalities will serve to address these pain points
