Inspiration

In the present day, data is extremely important in the development of applications and other innovations. This includes map data. However, traditional ways of collecting map data by using cars driving around places, or satellite imagery is sometimes inefficient and time-consuming. Therefore, our goal is to make map data be collected in a much easier way, which will also benefit everyone.

What it does

RoadLens is a software for collecting map data as users drive, and also helps them be safer on the road. It is an app that can be downloaded by anyone, and they only need a working camera put on the dashboard of the car. The software will use AI image processing to detect road signs, road features, and other things like phone booths or billboards next to the road. In return, the driver gets rewards points, which can be exchanged into coupons. If the driver wants, they can go to rural roads, which will give them more points. In addition, there are features to warn drivers about obstacles, pedestrians, holes in the road ahead, or other risks. It uses 5G streaming technology, where if an object is detected in a car ahead, the cars behind will also be warned at the same time. This makes the drivers want to use this software even more. The software is also free for everyone, but the data collected will be processed and sold to companies who need it, which is going to be our profit.

How we built it

First, we built the UX/UI to make it look convincing, but easy to use. We also had to make sure that the drivers are safe while using app, by make loud chimes instead of just messages appearing on screen, as we don't want drivers to be looking at the screen for risks ahead while driving. For the software development, it will use open source images to train the AI. The more people who test and use it, the more accurate the AI will be, which means that if a lot of people use it, it will be very accurate. The social media advertisement would have to targeted mostly at people who drive a lot on the road, because they would be interested in road safety and getting these rewards points.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into are figuring out how the software and technology would work. This is because it is a completely new innovation, which has rarely been thought of, so we had to think of each detail very carefully. We also had to think about safety, as dealing we are dealing with the risks of human lives.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The accomplishment we are most proud of is understanding the issue in data, and how the data is processed. It is relatively difficult, because the process of data collection is not made public very often, and we had to use our imagination to design this innovative software.

What we learned

We learned a lot about time management, creative thinking, and craftsmanship during this hackathon. We had a very limited time frame to submit this idea, so we had to work together in a team, and accept each other's strengths and weaknesses during the creation of this. We had a lot of fun during this hackathon too.

What's next for RoadLens

In the future, we hope that RoadLens opens up a new method of map data collection. This software will constantly be improved, and will be up to date for all users, for the benefit of the society as a whole.
