Inspiration
With summer in full bloom, alot of us tend to spend the majority in our rooms or offices or whatnot. We often do alot of work and do not want to be disturbed or want anyone going through our things or going through a space that is meant for us and us only.
In honour of MLH's ninth year of encouraging the creation of innovative solutions to problems we want to fix, we decided to make an infrared tripware alarm that senses when unwanted guests try to pry into your room or office or any sort of enclosed private space.
What it does and how we built it
Our product is an advanced tripwire alarm that uses the detection of infrared (Analog Distance Sensor) to detect any people or something that may enter your space. If any fixed object comes in front of the infrared sensor, an loud buzzer will sound, in hopes to drive the person/animal away and you will be alerted through text message using Twilio. We mainly used an Arduino microcontroller to build this project, with a buzzer and ir sensor embedded. The buzzer is sounded off when the IR sensor detects an object within its view.
Challenges we ran into
Originally we wanted to make an laser tripwire alarm with an 640 nanometer red-laser module, thatwould sound when its blocked by an object, obsturcting the path between the laser and the laser detecting diode. We also wanted to implement a radio transceiving signal system that had an passive buzzer that would sound when something was detected but we couldnt due to connectivity and wi-fi issues at our base. We also had issues transfering files to make our submission video.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were proud of implementing a radio transciever system that would signal in a different part of the house that someone or something has entered your space. We are also proud of building something for practical use and worked well when tested in a real-life case.
What we learned
How to improvise when things we had intially had planned didnt work out so we had to improvise a solution. This happened for when we had to change our plan for not having a laser module or being able to properly configure the radio transciever system respectively.
What's next for RoomSecure
We could implement a camera system or maybe something regarding detection with doorknobs and locks itself. We would also inplement a motion sensor if they avoided the sensors to avoid tripping it off.
