Inspiration

Most teens don’t cook because it feels like a boring chore or it’s just easier to order delivery. We wanted to make being in the kitchen feel more like a social game you actually want to play every day.

What it does

Roux is a social app where you cook daily recipes, share photos of your meals with friends, and earn Solana for doing it. It’s like a mix of Duolingo and Facebook, but for food complete with voice guided instructions so you don’t have to touch your phone with messy hands.

How we built it

We used the Solana blockchain for the reward system and Eleven Labs to give the app a natural-sounding voice for the recipes. We also used firebase to handle all the food photos and phone verification to keep the rewards secure.

Challenges we ran into

The hardest part was stopping people from faking their cooking just to earn coins. We solved this by making users cook a certain number of community recipes before they’re allowed to upload their own and earn royalties from others.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of making an app that actually makes you want to get off the couch and make dinner. It’s also cool that we built a way for people to earn money when their friends try out a recipe they posted.

What we learned

We realized that things like streaks and small rewards are huge motivators for getting teens to build new habits. We also learned that It is very difficult to coordinate a team with 4 people who have never worked with each other before.

What's next for Roux

We want to add sponsored recipes from brands like Domino’s and an AI feature that lets you search for meals based on your gym goals or exactly how many calories you want to eat.
