Inspiration
Students, especially female-identifying individuals, don't feel safe walking alone in and around campus. For example, there were 400+ reports of theft in the UT area in the last 6 months. We as female identifying college students frequently encounter unsafe or uncomfortable situations around our college campus and wanted to make an effort to change that.
What it does
safeHer is a mobile application that enables college students to alert their peers of places they feel unsafe on or near campus. They can submit citations for specific locations and other users can see these pins and adjust their route accordingly.
How we built it
We developed wireframes using Figma and designed the overall look and function of our app using it. We then analyzed the data we wanted to use using Foundry from Palantir. We then implemented our designs using Android-Studio.
Challenges we ran into
We had a hard time learning new tools like Foundry and Android-Studio and had to get help from industry experts.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It was rewarding to have the data we wanted to emphasize be visualized in a map using Foundry especially after we struggled to learn how to use it.
What we learned
We learned how to use new data analytics tools like Foundry and how certain data is better visualized using certain types of graphs and representations.
What's next for safeHer
We would like to further expand our Android development and build out the rest of the backend. We also would like to have a fully functional app and add information pertaining to college campuses in particular like Greek life.
