Inspiration

Each year, the world generates approximately 2.01 billion metric tons of municipal solid waste, with projections showing a 70% increase to 3.4 billion metric tons by 2050 due to population growth and urbanization. Currently, about 13.5% of global waste is recycled. Recycling rates vary significantly, with high-income countries recycling around 32% of their waste, while low-income countries recycle only about 4%. Annually, 353 million metric tons of plastic waste is produced, with only 9% recycled. Global adult literacy stands at around 86%, with youth literacy higher at 91%, though rates are uneven. In Sub-Saharan Africa, adult literacy ranges from 60% to 80%, and in South Asia, adult literacy in countries like India is around 74%, reflecting ongoing educational disparities. Education is the most powerful weapon to succeed and everyone should be able to get access to it. Our determination to find a solution that solves two problems at once was the main source of inspiration of our team.

How we built it

We used Google's newly launched platform called AppSheet which utilises Spreadsheets to it's maximum capacity and helps upcoming developer like ourselves to build apps with ease.

Challenges we ran into

  • Coming up with ideas with a short period of time and implementing said ideas.
  • Working at odd hours due to time-zone differences with the hackathon schedule.
  • Managing our time to be able to implement our ideas for the project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Trying out new platforms to build designs and apps.
  • Editing the demo video to make it engaging for viewers.

What we learned

We learnt that getting out of comfort zone by taking part in short-duration hackathons are the best way to improve our thinking skills and time management. We also got familiar with a new platform to build apps with ease.

What's next for Scrap4Smile

After adding a few final touches to our app it will be ready for launch starting with low-income countries like India since they are in desperate need of a solution like this. soon we will start spreading our network to other countries this making it an app being used worldwide.
