What it does
SchoolStar strives to support students and assist them on their journey to success. Our tutors work to prepare students for classes they struggle in and exams that require immense amounts of skill and technique. As a student, YOU are our first priority, and through our resources, we hope to help you achieve your goals. Volunteer tutors seek to share their expertise with students nationwide in an effort to make quality education accessible to all. In order to support our tutors, we encourage those with the means to donate and support our community. Something that sets SchoolStar apart from other tutoring platforms is that we accept resources from our fellow community members. We encourage those a part of the STAR community to send in other resources that may assist students who prefer independent learning over private tutoring.
How we built it
We built SchoolStar on Figma, a web and app development website which allows users to have full design and coding capabilities.
Challenges we ran into
We were both new to Figma as we took on this project, so there was a lot of learning and frustration trying to make our ideas come to life. Also, as we were building out the site, we ran into some questions about how the non-profit would work logistically. Our “resources” tab was something different before we discussed what it would finally be.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of how everything came together at the end of all our hard work. We spent a lot of time brainstorming, scrapping ideas, and restarting over this long process, so to see that we could create a beautiful and well-thought website is a proud accomplishment of ours.
What we learned
We learned a plethora of concepts when working on this project and being a part of the Learnathon 2022 community. Throughout the hackathon we attended and watched many workshops such as the Artificial Intelligence workshop, the Cybersecurity workshop, the Web Design workshop, and the Tech Interviews Workshop. In each workshop, we learned new skills inside and outside of programming. Outside of workshops, we became much more familiar with Figma, a web and app development website we had never used before. We research how to add forms, transitions, links, animations, and more! Regardless of the outcome, we are proud of the skills we gained during this hackathon.
What's next for SchoolStar
We hope to continue to develop SchoolStar by actually coding it in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This was in our initial plans, but we ran out of time to complete it. We also think making SchoolStar a functioning organization would be really beneficial to students. Our ultimate goal with this project is to make learning and success accessible to everyone by creating a collaborative community of tutors and students. As students entering our senior year of high school, knowing a free service such as SchoolStar existed would have made our learning journeys so much easier. We also know that we would have loved to volunteer our own tutoring services to the same organization that helped us reach success.
