Inspiration

The inspiration behind Scio AI Planner was personal. As a student, I often struggled with balancing my academic schedule and staying organized. After speaking to friends, I realized that many of them faced similar challenges with managing their time effectively. Their feedback motivated me to create a solution, and I knew it was something I had to do whenever I had the chance. When I saw this Hackathon, it felt like the perfect opportunity to finally bring the idea to life. So, I decided to use this moment to get it done.

What it does

Scio AI Planner is an AI-powered tool designed to help students manage their schedules, tasks, and study plans more efficiently. It integrates with Google Calendar and Tasks to provide personalized study plans and adapt to a student's changing commitments. Scio also includes web search integration for easy access to study materials and multimedia analysis to enhance learning. Its conversational AI interface makes it feel like you're talking to a study buddy, not just using a traditional planner.

How we built it

I started building the app solo, initially focusing on getting a working version done in just two days. Once I had the basic functionality running locally, I began working on the UI, which was a significant achievement for me since this was my first successful UI outside of Python. Over the week, I integrated the frontend with the backend, making features like Google Calendar sync and task management work seamlessly. Towards the end of the project, I ran into some big challenges, but I'll get to that shortly.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge I faced was being disconnected from the internet for almost an entire week. Without any way to test my code or access resources, I felt stuck. Since I didn’t have a teammate to delegate tasks to, everything fell on me. As the deadline approached, I had to rush to a place with coverage and spent more than 10 hours trying to get everything working. Thankfully, a friend of mine stepped in to help me out with the frontend. Due to the time zone difference, it was late for him, but he still managed to assist, allowing me to focus on finishing the backend. Even with all the odds stacked against us, we were able to pull everything together just in time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One of my proudest accomplishments is that I was able to create a fully functioning app with both frontend and backend components, mostly by myself. I was also able to successfully integrate AI with tools like Google Calendar and Tasks from scratch without relying on frameworks. This project is something that my friends, and hopefully many others, will benefit from, and that's something I'm really proud of.

What we learned

This project taught me the value of teamwork, even though I managed most of it alone. I realized that, while I’m capable of handling a project on my own like I used to, having the right people to lean on can make all the difference. My friend's help with the frontend was crucial, and it reminded me that collaboration is essential in any project.

What's next for Scio

Scio has only just begun. We won't stop here. My friend is interested in the project and has promised to continue working with me to add more advanced features. We're planning to make Scio bigger and better, incorporating even more tools to help students succeed.
