Inspiration 💡

The world generates about 2.01 billion metric tons of municipal solid waste annually, expected to rise by 70% to 3.4 billion tons by 2050 due to population growth and urbanization. Currently, only 13.5% of global waste is recycled, with high-income countries recycling 32% and low-income nations just 4%. Of the 353 million metric tons of plastic waste produced each year, only 9% is recycled. Global adult literacy is around 86%, while youth literacy is 91%, though rates vary widely. Inspired by the need to address both waste and education challenges, our team is determined to find solutions.

How we built it 🛠️

We leveraged Google's newly launched platform, AppSheet, which maximizes the potential of Google Sheets and simplifies app development. AppSheet empowers emerging developers like us by providing a user-friendly interface that allows us to create fully functional apps without extensive coding knowledge. This platform made it easier for us to transform our ideas into applications quickly and efficiently, streamlining the development process and making app-building accessible to those with limited technical experience.

Challenges we ran into ❌

We faced the challenge of generating ideas quickly and implementing them within a short timeframe. Due to time-zone differences with the hackathon schedule, we often found ourselves working at odd hours. Effective time management was crucial to ensure we could fully develop and implement our ideas for the project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of 🏆

We explored new platforms to design and build apps, experimenting with different tools to enhance our project. A key focus was identifying and mapping locations where people can easily recycle, making it more accessible for users. Additionally, we worked on editing the demo video to ensure it was engaging and informative for viewers, effectively showcasing our efforts and solutions.

What we learned 📝

We learnt that getting out of comfort zone by taking part in short-duration hackathons are the best way to improve our thinking skills and time management. We also got familiar with a new platform to build apps with ease.

What's next for Scrap4Smile 🚀

After adding a few final touches to our app it will be ready for launch starting with low-income countries like India since they are in desperate need of a solution like this. soon we will start spreading our network to other countries this making it an app being used worldwide.
