Research and insights

As a visual artist and designer, I have always loved journalling and scrapbooking. It’s a meaningful way to reflect on past experiences and focus on the little things in life. However, I often find it hard to focus on journalling while I juggle time between work and university. Some common roadblocks to scrapbooking include:

  1. Lack of motivation: What am I getting out of journalling?
  2. Requires physical materials: Not possessing physical scrapbooking materials is a roadblock for some people who enjoy decorating their spreads
  3. Cognitive overload: Not knowing what to write about, feeling overwhelmed, and perfectionism

Since moving across the globe for university, I also often struggle with maintaining my friendships from back home over long distances. I discovered three pain points on why many people like myself experience friendship degradation over distance.

  1. Differing life experiences result in less relatability
  2. Reduced contact and a lack of bonding time
  3. More conscious effort is required to maintain the friendship

I decided to solve these two struggles with one solution: ScrapShare. ScrapShare is a collaborative digital scrapbooking app that allows users to maintain long distance relationships through building lasting narratives.

Final Product- your final design and outcomes

ScrapShare solves the three common roadblocks to scrapbooking.

  • Lack of motivation to journal is solved through a ‘prompt’ of sorts, which is to share daily tidbits of life with a long distance friend to maintain closeness, bond over an activity, and preserve a narrative of moments.
  • Since ScrapShare is a digital scrapbooking platform, it also solves the issue of not possessing physical scrapbooking materials since it provides a means of uploading photos and images, and even provides some preset stickers on the platform.
  • Lastly, cognitive overload and feeling overwhelmed with journaling is solved through an engaging activity, and sharing snippets of daily life with friends often leads to a heartwarming, calming feeling.

ScrapShare also allows people to maintain friendships and close bonds over long distances through solving the pain points on friendship degradation over distance.

  • Although differing life experiences result in less relatability, that’s seen as a strength in ScrapShare! Diversity in daily experiences make for interesting stories to share on the daily scrapbook spread.
  • ScrapShare as a daily activity increases contact and bonding time since you get to share daily experiences. Maintaining this communication as a habit allows us to make more conscious effort to maintain the friendship, and adding scrapbooking elements provides a fun creative twist to keep people engaged.
